What is a Superfood and Why Do You Need It?

It seems that at every corner we turn, there’s a new food craze to follow! Tired of looking for the latest diet craze or change in healthy eating? Look no further! Superfoods have been and always will be an option that is here to stay.

A superfood is actually a term used to market extremely healthy foods with benefits that are specific to certain areas of your body. While the term Superfood is not commonly used among nutritionists, it is making its way within the health conscious communities across the globe.

Superfoods are usually high in antioxidants and can help fight diseases such as cancer and heart disease! We are all aware of the age old idea that only berries can hold the right amount of antioxidants that balance your diet, but berries are merely the beginning.

Here are a few great superfoods to look out for…you can thank us later! 🙂

Seaweed– it sounds strange, but seaweed is a great superfood that can easily be incorporated into your diet. The more popular use of seaweed that we see is in the form of “Nori” which is a Japanese term for an edible form of this superfood. Veggie sushi rolls can be wrapped in Nori and you’ll have a quick and easy daily dose of your seaweed superfood. Seaweed has many minerals that are great for your bones such as calcium and magnesium.

Chia Seeds – these are great because they are a plant based alternative and full of omega-3 fatty acids. Vegans are not prone to eating fish, so this is the perfect substitute. You can add these to almost any of your favorite liquid meals – so this is great for the average juicer!

Kale – we’ve all heard the hype surrounding Kale these days and that hype is for a number of reasons. Kale is a cabbage leaf that is praised for it’s high amounts of Vitamin A and Vitamin C. Not to mention, Kale also has a great amount of antioxidants to contribute to any meal. This can be placed in soups, salads, smoothies and more.

Native Foods Cafe is a chain restaurant which provides the average vegan with great plant based options and the occasional superfood item on the menu. We recommend almost any dish with avocado! This too, is a great superfood that we know most people love and enjoy!
